Australië Australia
Australië is voor veel vakmensen de eerste stap: veel werk in de bouw, mijnbouw en installatietechniek, en een buitenleven dat moeilijk te evenaren is. Maar zorg is er duur. Een ambulancerit kan honderden tot duizenden dollars kosten en een ziekenhuisopname zonder verzekering loopt snel op.
- Publieke zorg: het Australische Medicare dekt tijdelijke werkers niet of maar beperkt.
- Op het werk: je werkgever is verplicht verzekerd voor workers' compensation. Buiten je werk ben je daarvoor niet gedekt.
- Visum: bij een working holiday visum is een zorgverzekering sterk aangeraden. Bij een gesponsord werkvisum (zoals subclass 482) kan de overheid een Australische zorgverzekering eisen: check altijd je visumvoorwaarden.

For many tradespeople Australia is the first step: plenty of work in construction, mining and installation, and an outdoor life that is hard to beat. But healthcare is expensive. An ambulance ride can cost hundreds to thousands of dollars and an uninsured hospital stay adds up quickly.
- Public healthcare: Australia's Medicare covers temporary workers only partly or not at all.
- At work: your employer must hold workers' compensation insurance. Outside work you are not covered by it.
- Visa: health insurance is strongly recommended for a working holiday visa. On a sponsored work visa (such as subclass 482) the government may require Australian health insurance: always check your visa conditions.
- Watch out for: heat, sun, snakes and long-distance traffic. Driving for work? You drive on the left.
Canada
Canada zoekt vakmensen in de bouw, de techniek en het transport. Je werkt in steden als Vancouver, Calgary en Toronto of in de natuur van de Rocky Mountains. De winters zijn streng en de afstanden groot.
- Visum (IEC working holiday): je moet bij aankomst kunnen aantonen dat je voor je hele verblijf verzekerd bent voor ziektekosten, ziekenhuisopname en repatriëring. Is je verzekering korter, dan kan je werkvergunning korter worden.
- Publieke zorg: provinciale zorgverzekeringen gelden pas na registratie, vaak met een wachttijd, en niet voor iedere tijdelijke werker.
- Op het werk: provinciale werkgeversverzekeringen (zoals WorkSafeBC of WSIB) dekken een arbeidsongeval, niet je vrije tijd.
- Even naar de VS? Zorg in de Verenigde Staten is extreem duur. Ga je ook naar de VS, kies dan Wereld inclusief VS. Een korte stopover of toeristisch bezoek is onder voorwaarden ook met Wereld exclusief VS verzekerd.
Canada needs tradespeople in construction, technical trades and transport. You work in cities such as Vancouver, Calgary and Toronto or in the wilderness of the Rocky Mountains. Winters are harsh and distances are long.
- Visa (IEC working holiday): on arrival you must be able to show that you are covered for medical care, hospitalisation and repatriation for your whole stay. If your insurance is shorter, your work permit may be shorter too.
- Public healthcare: provincial health plans only apply after registration, often with a waiting period, and not for every temporary worker.
- At work: provincial workers' compensation boards (such as WorkSafeBC or WSIB) cover workplace accidents, not your free time.
- Popping over to the US? Healthcare in the United States is extremely expensive. Travelling to the US as well? Choose Worldwide including US. A short stopover or tourist visit is covered under conditions with Worldwide excluding US.
Nieuw-Zeeland New Zealand
Nieuw-Zeeland heeft vakmensen nodig voor woningbouw en infrastructuur, van Auckland tot Christchurch en Queenstown. Werken met uitzicht op bergen en fjorden, met in je vrije tijd hiken, raften en skiën.
- Visum (working holiday): verplicht is een volledige medische en reisverzekering voor je hele verblijf. Je kunt gevraagd worden dit aan te tonen.
- ACC: het Nieuw-Zeelandse ongevallenfonds betaalt een deel van de behandeling na een ongeval, ook voor bezoekers. Ziekte, repatriëring en reiskosten naar huis dekt ACC niet.
- Publieke zorg: voor ziekte ben je als tijdelijke werker meestal niet gedekt door de publieke zorg.
- Avontuur: wintersport, bungeejumpen en duiken tot 40 meter zijn standaard meeverzekerd. Raften en skydiven met professionele begeleiding ook.
New Zealand needs tradespeople for housing and infrastructure, from Auckland to Christchurch and Queenstown. Working with views of mountains and fjords, with hiking, rafting and skiing in your free time.
- Visa (working holiday): full medical and travel insurance for your entire stay is required. You may be asked to show proof.
- ACC: New Zealand's accident scheme pays part of your treatment after an accident, also for visitors. ACC does not cover illness, repatriation or travel costs home.
- Public healthcare: as a temporary worker you are usually not covered by public healthcare for illness.
- Adventure: winter sports, bungee jumping and diving to 40 metres are covered as standard. Rafting and skydiving with professional supervision too.
